The Origins of Mother's Day

The modern American version of Mother's Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908. It became an official U.S. holiday in 1914, but its roots lie in her mother's own activism and community work.

A Daughter's Promise

Anna Jarvis's mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers and created "Mothers' Day Work Clubs" to address public health issues. After her mother's death in 1905, Anna conceived of Mother's Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. She campaigned tirelessly, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Ironically, Anna Jarvis later became a major opponent of the holiday's commercialization, arguing it should be a day of personal sentiment, not profit.
