The Origins of Father's Day

The modern concept of Father's Day began in the early 20th century in the United States. The driving force behind the holiday was a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honor her own father.

A Daughter's Tribute

Sonora Smart Dodd's father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and a single parent who raised six children on his own. After hearing a sermon about the newly recognized Mother's Day, Sonora felt strongly that fathers deserved similar recognition. She campaigned for a day to honor fathers, and the first city-wide Father's Day was celebrated in her home state of Washington on June 19, 1910. The holiday slowly gained popularity across the nation and was officially made a nationwide holiday in the U.S. by President Richard Nixon in 1972.
